Google Disappoint, Revenues Bad Than They Expected

The search giant posted record-breaking quarterly revenue of $10.58 billion.Google reported a 27% increase in revenues for the last 3 months of 2011.Google shares fell 10% in after-hours trading to $575.It reported 3-month revenues of $10.6bn (£6.8bn). Its net profit rose 6.4% to $2.7bn.

"Google had a really strong quarter ending a great year," said chief executive Larry Page.
"I am super excited about the growth of Android, Gmail, and Google+, which now has 90 million users globally - well over double what I announced just three months ago."

It came as fellow technology firms Microsoft and Intel also posted results for the same period.
Microsoft posted flat earnings of $6.62bn in the same quarter, seeing strong business demand for software and services.
Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, posted a better-than-expected 6% rise in earnings to $3.36bn, even though floods in Thailand knocked out factories that produce hard drives and components.China now has 20% consumption of the personal PC market - there are about one million PCs 'consumed' every day globally and there is still lots of growth, especially the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China."
But analysts were less impressed with Google's figures.
"Expectations were very high and they have missed that," said Trip Chowdhry, from Global Equities Research.
"Unlike Microsoft and Intel, estimates for Google have been rising for a few months."
The number of clicks on Google's search adverts rose significantly in the fourth quarter, but the amount that Google was able to charge advertisers for each click fell 8%.
"Expectations had got ahead of themselves for Google, largely because investors don't have a good feel for what happens outside the US," said Jordan Rohan from Stifel Nicolaus.

"North America has remained strong, but there are parts of the world where there's a lot of economic pressure. I would have to assume Europe, particularly Germany and some others, undergoing austerity measures. The underlying demand in those countries is weak."
For the full year, Google reported a 29% rise in revenue to $37.9bn, with net profit up 14% to $9.7bn.

Also weighing on Google’s quarterly results: operating expenses, which climbed 35 percent, to $3.38 billion in the fourth quarter, in part because of Google’s aggressive hiring and increased spending on advertising

Russian space probe fall into Pacific Ocean

A Russian space probe designed to boost the nation's pride on a bold mission to a moon of Mars came down in flames Sunday, showering fragments into the south Pacific west of Chile's coast, officials said.
Pieces from the Phobos-Ground, which had become stuck in Earth's orbit, landed in water 775 miles west of Wellington Island in Chile's south, the Russian military Air and Space Defense Forces said in a statement carried by the country's news agencies.

The military space tracking facilities were monitoring the probe's crash, its spokesman Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said. Zolotukhin said the deserted ocean area is where Russia guides its discarded space cargo ships serving the International Space Station.

RIA Novosti news agency, however, cited Russian ballistic experts who said the fragments fell over a broader patch of Earth's surface, spreading from the Atlantic and including the territory of Brazil. It said the midpoint of the crash zone was located in the Brazilian state of Goias.

The $170 million craft was one of the heaviest and most toxic pieces of space junk ever to crash to Earth, but space officials and experts said the risks posed by its crash were minimal because the toxic rocket fuel on board and most of the craft's structure would burn up in the atmosphere high above the ground anyway.
The Phobos-Ground was designed to travel to one of Mars' twin moons, Phobos, land on it, collect soil samples and fly them back to Earth in 2014 in one of the most daunting interplanetary missions ever. It got stranded in Earth's orbit after its Nov. 9 launch, and efforts by Russian and European Space Agency experts to bring it back to life failed.

Roscosmos said that all of the fuel will burn up on re-entry, a forecast Klinkrad said was supported by calculations done by NASA and the ESA. He said the craft's tanks are made of aluminum alloy that has a very low melting temperature, and they will burst at an altitude of more than 60 miles.

The space era has seen far larger spacecraft crash. NASA's Skylab space station that went down in 1979 weighed 85 tons and Russia's Mir space station that de-orbited in 2001 weighed about 143 tons. Their descent fueled fears around the world, but the wreckage of both fell far away from populated areas.
The Phobos-Ground was Russia's most expensive and the most ambitious space mission since Soviet times. Its mission to the crater-dented, potato-shaped Martian moon was to give scientists precious materials that could shed more light on the genesis of the solar system.

The Phobos-Ground also contained a tiny quantity of the radioactive metal Cobalt-57 in one of its instruments, but Roscosmos said it poses no threat of radioactive contamination.
The spacecraft also carried a small cylinder with a collection of microbes as part of an experiment by the Pasadena, California-based Planetary Society that designed to explore whether they can survive interplanetary travel. The cylinder is attached to a capsule that was supposed to deliver Phobos ground samples back to Earth.
Igor Marinin, the editor of Russia's Novosti Kosmonavtiki magazine, said on Russia's NTV television that it would likely be destroyed.

Intel Releases New Faster Atom Netbook Chips

Chip giant Intel has announced the release of its latest Atom processors, codenamed Cedar Trail, and consumers can expect to see netbooks powered by these chips and featuring instant-on, instant-connect capabilities early next year.

The company issued a statement on Wednesday stating that its Cedar Trail processor will run on netbooks produced by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) such as Acer, Asus, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba. These devices will boast up to 10 hours of battery life and weeks of standby time, as power consumption has been reduced by 20 percent than the previous Atom iteration, Oak Trail, it added.

These new netbooks will also have instant-on, instant-connect features due to its Rapid Start and Smart Connect technologies, Intel noted. Rapid Start allows for quick resumption from standby mode and battery life conservation, while Smart Connect gets users connected to the Internet as soon as they open up their devices. The device will also automatically update e-mail, Twitter and RSS feeds even in sleep mode, the statement said.

Additionally, users will be able to wirelessly stream videos and photos from the netbook to a television, or stream music to speaker sets, the chipmaker pointed out.
Beyond netbooks, though, Intel has been focusing its energies on promoting a new category of laptops called ultrabooks, and had even set up a US$300 million fund to create buzz around these devices.

Firefox worth nearly US$1B to Google

Firefox and its default search box is still extremely valuable to Google.How valuable? The three-year default search deal that Firefox's nonprofit parent company, Mozilla, just inked with Google is worth nearly US$300 million per year, according to unnamed sources who spoke to AllThingsD.
In a statement to AllThings Google's senior vice president of search, Alan Eustace, said: "Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come." To those who spend a lot of time observing Mozilla, the deal is no surprise.

Mozilla revealed in October that Google contributed the vast majority of its revenue for fiscal year 2010, around 84 percent. That figure came in at US$123 million, an 18 percent jump over 2009. The new deal, at nearly US$300 million per year, would represent around a 40 percent jump for Mozilla, which has aligned itself with defending openness on the Web.

Openness doesn't mean a lack of business acumen, apparently. According to the report, Mozilla was entertaining offers from both Microsoft's Bing search engine and Yahoo. Even though Yahoo search is powered by Microsoft, landing the Firefox default search slot would've been seen as a way to staunch Yahoo's declining market share. Yahoo determined the deal to be "too costly", but Mozilla still has partner deals with other search providers such as Amazon, eBay, Yandex, as well as Bing and Yahoo.

Double the money may make things easier for Mozilla, but the company still has a challenging road to tread. Chrome is the still-rising star of the browser world, Internet Explorer 9 and the nascent version 10 continue to grow beyond techie punchline status, and the even with this week's release of Firefox 9 for PCs and Android, Mozilla struggles to redefine its mission against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Web.

Anonymous hackers hit US security firm Stratfor

The activist hacker group Anonymous says it has stolen thousands of emails, passwords and credit card details from a US-based security think-tank.

The hackers claim they were able to obtain the information because the company, Stratfor, did not encrypt it.
They say Stratfor's clients include the US defence department, law enforcement agencies and media organisations.

The Austin-based company says it has now suspended the operation on its servers and email.
An alleged member of Anonymous posted an online message, claiming that the group had used Stratfor clients' credit card details to make "over a million dollars" in donations to different charities.
Stratfor later announced that it would keep its email and servers suspended for some time.

It also said the disclosure was "merely a list of some of the members that have purchased our publications and does not comprise a list of individuals or entities that have a relationship with Stratfor".
Anonymous has previously claimed responsibility for cyber attacks on financial institutions seen as enemies of the whistleblowing website Wikileaks.

Samsung Take Sony's stake in LCD joint venture for $939 million

Sony and Samsung have ended their LCD joint venture established in 2004. The split comes after rumors of the dissolution were first reported in October and follows Sony's November announcement of a $1.2 billion annual loss due to weak demand from its loss-leading television division coupled with a strong yen. Samsung will acquire all of Sony's 50 percent share for 1.08 trillion won (about $938.97 million) and convert the joint venture into a wholly-owned subsidiary. In addition to monetizing its share in S-LCD, Sony enters into a strategic relationship with Samsung that secures a steady supply of LCD panels based on market prices and without the burden of operating a manufacturing facility. The deal is expected to close by January of 2012 subject to regulatory approvals.

 
The move comes as Sony struggles to compete in the global television business. The Japanese company has already reshuffled its TV division this year and is rumored to be considering alternative approaches to the market including launching its own streaming internet TV service to compete with cable.
In separate news, Samsung also announced that it would be absorbing the remaining 50 percent stake of Samsung LED from Samsung Electro-Mechanics in an effort to further streamline its business.

As part of its algorithmic transition to Bing, Yahoo! shut down Site Explorer on Monday November 21, 2011; webmasters can now access Site Explorer services using the Bing Webmaster Tools

A "beloved" SEO tool, Yahoo Site Explorer launched in late 2005 and offered detailed link information for competitors. According to Search Engine Land, while Bing Webmaster Tools offers linkage information about a site that has been claimed within their systems, it does not offer data about other sites. In other words, without Yahoo Site Explorer, "there is no tool from any major search engine that will show all the links pointing at any site on the web."
